From The Vault : Kelly Rowland – ‘Like This’

In 2007, after a short musical hiatus, TGJ-favorite Kelly Rowland showed those who had doubted her that she could in fact “bump like this”. Our pick for this week’s From The Vault comes in the form of her club-classic ‘Like This’

Produced by Polow Da Don and written by Sean Garrett and Rowland herself, the track – which features a rap verse by the amazing Eve – was released as the first single from her sophomore effort ‘Ms. Kelly’.

It peaked at #30 on the US Hot 100, a respectable feat if you ask us, still we are sure you would agree when we say it deserved an even higher ranking – as it is often the case with Kelly’s material. On the Hot R&B/Hip-Hop chart though, the tune managed to reach the 7th position and was her very first single to ever top the Hot Dance Club Songs tally. It also proved to be an international hit placing inside the Top 20 in Australia and Top 5 of the British and Irish charts.

The house party-themed accompanying visual, helmed by Canadian director Mike Ruiz does a stellar job capturing the carefree vibe of the song and at the time presented us with a brand new Kelly, a sassier and more confident Kelly. The performance bits are particularly stunning and the night-vision shots make for a nice addition.

With ‘Ice’ generating quite the buzz ever since its release last week and ‘Motivation’ standing as one of the biggest achievement of her career, let’s only hope the ex-X-Factor judge doesn’t forget to feed us with the club-bangers on her next project.

For as much as us and radios alike live for her mellow material, cuts such as this one, ‘Work (Put It In)’, ‘I’m Dat Chick’ or ‘Turn It Up’ as well as her more Dance-oriented tunes only testify of the diversity Ms. Kelly has to offer.

I loved this song, this was a great single choice. I agree it should’ve charted higher, but it was respectable for her to even get where she did. Thou, I also think it would’ve been higher if her live performances matched the video version of the song. This period Kelly was pretty off vocally. I think the issue with Kelly is, she never puts out in the media/entertainment biz that she can do it on her own musically. Every single it’s just about features, this one, “Motivation”, “Lay It On Me”, “Dilemma”, etc. It’s like Kelly you have great tracks on your OWN! Like for example, “Here I Am” had some great single choices, just for & with HER alone. It wasn’t like electro dance, it was like urban/dance, she could’ve released “Feeling Me Right Now”, that would’ve been the ultimate single choice to show that she loves herself & she can do it on her own, & with the right video & promotion it could’ve slayed, “Turn It Up” as you said, “Work It Man” (yeah it was featured, but it was a banger), “I’m Dat Chick” , “Heaven on Earth” (as a later on ballad), “Keep It Between Us” should’ve been performed as a single instead of just putting the song out there & releasing the video months later, actually remember we were supposed to get the “Feeling Me Right Now” video & it was supposed to get single treatment, but nothing. I despise when artist do stuff like that & don’t even update the fans on the situation.

Like I like “Ice” growing on me, but it’s not all that. & I wish she’d stop using wayne, give us something unexpected. & Wayne really didn’t add nothing to that track. Hope Kelly has massive success this time around, I have to give her credit for all the hard work & effort she did this last year, she is really BRANDING herself exceptionally right now, despite her musical successes overall.

Btw, great post Sam. I don’t think we congratulate you know enough on your website.
This article was also a great read. I am sure there will be club bangers on the album, though I would argue that Motivation is (and undoubtedly ICE will be) a club banger. 🙂

Stop talking about yourself like that. Kelly Rowland is a talented super star.

      • irene46 July 10, 2012

yes she is. her voice has really come a looong way. it’s smooth and mellow. also she can dance her ass off. she also has major projection on stage.

i don’t wanna get jumped but i like her every bit as much as bey.

she has to talent to blow all the way up if more people appreciated real talent.

anyway, good luck to her. hope she starts getting the success she deserves.

“It peaked at #30 on the US Hot 100, a respectable feat if you ask us”

I’ll keep this in mind when you try to call other singers with singles that charted WAY higher flops.

I always thought that Ms. Kelly , and Dilemma were her two best albums.
If the album would have promoted right ,, Here i am would have a good

  19. Sleazy July 9, 2012

  20. Pucci July 9, 2012

This has & will always be my favorite song from Kelly. Her image now is a little bit s***, but I say so what.

I know alot of ppl criticize her for it now, but my question to them would be why didn’t you buy or pay attention to her music when she was making songs like this? The same thing with Trey Songz as well.
